So I missed this post earlier in August. Apple introduced the new aluminum iMac starting at the size of 20″ wide screen up to 24″.

The new aluminum iMac

I really like the way they updated the existing imac. From a all plastic to something more solid and more environmental friendly. I was considering upgrading my Mac Mini to that new iMac but then I thought about what I should do with the screen when the hardware is obsolete. Many computer user uses the same monitor as they upgrade or replace their main system. I believe it’ll be a waste if I upgrade.

In this event Apple also unveiled the new iLife ‘08, iWork ‘08 and the subscription based .Mac. Aside from the software, new Apple keyboards were also introduced along with the iMac. Several hardware were found refreshed as the event had gone by.

Click here to watch the broadcast.

So being a new mac user I often wonder how I could backup all of my important data in case of accidental damage to my beloved computer. Well, back when I was a Windows user there are many backup software out there to do the biddings but now I’m on a Mac and wanting to be cheap opt to find free solutions.

The following link gives you the background information on what is to be backed up and how to restore your Mac data:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106941

The above link is the knowledge base straight from Apple.com.

As for me I use a simple Automator script to do my backup. I have the script run against a source folder and just dump all the files onto my external hard drive. done and done!

Recently I have discovered this little tool that seems to be useful for users like me (not too hardcore but want to know what’s happening with system). I have stumble upon this little utility called GeekTool. This allows you to use some (or all) of your desktop real estate to display log files, shell commands, or simply a snapshot of an image somewhere stored on the Internet. It’s very useful if you want to see your logs without opening any other programs or viewers.Well done Tynsoe!Tynsoe Project

Well, recently I have made an order to upgrade my Mac Mini. I order two sticks of RAM from this website http://www.canadaram.com/. The order delivered the next day which is a lot faster than any other online delivery system I’ve ever seen. Their price is also very nice, I was so impressed I have to let you guys know about this place.

I did have 1 faulty stick of ram. I sent them an email asking for exchange, 1 hour later they replied the email and promise me the new stick will be sent to me and a return envelope will be in the mail as well. Man, talk about stellar customer support, I was speechless!

Anyways, for people that needs to purchase RAM, I highly recommend this place

Ubuntu will be my next project, and as usual I will cover applications that are easy to use and of course, commonly used in the Ubuntu community. I’m by noway an expert in the computer world, but I use softwares that people would actually want to use in their daily life.
